Udai graduated with a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 1974 and came to Princeton, earning a PhD in Computer Science in 1978. He began his career as an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University, after which he worked at Bell Labs (originally part of AT&T, then Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent, and Nokia), managing research and development of highly fault-tolerant telecommunication infrastructure. He is now retired. As a long-time board member and former president of the India Classical Music Society, he has helped promote awareness and appreciation of Indian classical music. While he did a good bit of sailing on Lake Michigan in his younger days, he now enjoys more relaxed activities such as bridge, travel, and reading.  He lives with his wife, Shalini, in Naperville.
