VIRTUAL EVENT: CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE FIGHT AGAINST TUNNEL VISION

 

The Great Lakes bathe Chicago in their majestic beauty, recreation, fisheries, and drinking water. Yet, experts track significant climate change impacts to this vital, fresh surface water ecosystem. We will discuss an epic fight to protect the Great Lakes and the effort to stop threats posed by one fossil fuel pipeline and a proposed tunnel.

The moderated conversation will feature: 

Debbie Chizewer '88, Managing Attorney, Midwest Regional Office (Chicago), Earthjustice 

As the Managing Attorney for Earthjustice’s Chicago office, Debbie and the Midwest team partner with communities to fight for clean air, water, and soil, the protection of precious places, and the acceleration of the transition away from fossil fuels to clean energy. 

 
This work builds on Debbie’s many decades of environmental experience. She fought for environmental justice in the Midwest at Northwestern Law’s environmental law clinic, promoted Great Lakes health at the Alliance for the Great Lakes, and protected wildlife and public lands in the Rockies for the National Wildlife Federation. Debbie graduated from Princeton University in 1988 and Boston University School of Law in 1991. After graduation from law school, she clerked in the US District Court in the District of Delaware.

Maiky Iberkleid '15, Co-Founder, RESILIFT, Inc. 

Maiky is the Co-Founder of RESILIFT, a Climate Adaptation company that reduces residential flood risk by lifting homes onto new foundations above flood levels.  He decided to tackle flood risk after years of seeing the impact of flooding in his hometown of La Paz, Bolivia and the devastation of Superstorm Sandy during his time in New Jersey. At Princeton, Maiky studied Electrical Engineering and served as an RCA in Butler and as a First Aid Coordinator and Leader for OA. In addition to his Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Maiky holds a Master's in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
