Community Service: CHICAGO FOOD DEPOSITORY - FAMILY DAY - APRIL 23, 2016

Calling all alumni, families, and kids age 5 & up – this is a chance to serve our Chicagoland community – TOGETHER!

This will be a fun and productive afternoon for all!  KIDS age 5 and up with parent are welcome!

Greater Chicago Food Depository is Chicago’s food bank — a nonprofit food distribution and training center that provides food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community.

The Food Depository, founded in 1979, makes a daily impact across Cook County with a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile programs, children’s programs, older adult programs and innovative responses that address the root causes of hunger. Last year, the Food Depository distributed 67 million pounds of shelf-stable food, fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 154,000 meals every day."

Our Princeton Club volunteer day will involve helping repack bulk products to individual/family sizes, assemble boxes with assorted food, check expiration dates and label and glean products.

Greater Chicago Food Depository Volunteer Dress Code

Volunteers at the Greater Chicago Food Depository are requested to arrive dressed appropriately for the work they are performing. The dress code has been developed with the safety of volunteers in mind, following workplace safety standards set for Food Depository staff members. Volunteers not dressed appropriately will not be allowed to participate in scheduled projects.

Clothing

Volunteers must wear long pants and shirts that cover the shoulders/upper arms. Jeans and a t-shirt are best for working in the warehouse. During the winter months layering is recommended, as it can be cooler on the warehouse floor. Items not allowed: shorts, capri pants, short skirts or tank tops.

*** Events: For some events a t-shirt will be provided to volunteers participating in certain volunteer projects. Examples include: food shows, speakers bureau, bag distributions, etc.

Shoes

Closed shoes are required. This includes, but is not limited to, athletic shoes, dress shoes and boots. No open toed or open back shoes are allowed. You will be standing for the duration of the project and comfortable shoes are recommended!

Jewelry

Loose and dangling jewelry should be removed before entering the warehouse. Some projects require that all jewelry be removed to maintain the safety of the product.

Grooming & Hygiene

  • Many projects require hand washing, aprons and hairnets. Please be prepared to tie back long hair.
  • Tattoos: All visible tattoos should be covered while representing the Food Depository.
  • Piercings: No visible facial piercing jewelry, other than in the ears, is allowed.
  • Health and Wellness: In order to protect the safety of the food, please inform project supervisor if you have any open cuts or wounds or if you are not feeling well. Some projects also require additional hand washing/sanitizing and protective work wear.
