Dance Performance with David Rousseve '81 - February 6, 2015

Join the Princeton Club of Chicago and FFR Princeton BTGALA for a performance of "Stardust," choreographed, written, and directed by David Rousseve '81.

"Stardust" explores the evolving nature of intimacy in our technology-driven, furiously paced world.  Redefining the coming of age story for the electronic age, the evening-length piece follows an African American gay urban teenager who - never seen on stage - is present only by the emotionally laden tweets and texts he sends.  His unanswered messages are projected in video by Rousseve's long time collaborator Cari Ann Shim Sham.  The sound score juxtaposes the intimate romanticism of Nat King Cole standards with the rough-edged, hip-hop inflected original music of d. Sabela Grimes.  Rousseve's lush choreography is leavened by frenetic, angular representations of the protagonist's anxious states of mind.  Designer Christopher Kuhl's lighting adds emotional texture and a surreal quality of the work.

Please note the program contains "mature content."

Some quotes about David's work:

“David Roussève is one of the most provocative figures on the modern dance scene: a multi-talented artist, a low-key but incisively compelling performer eloquent in both words and movement, and a choreographer of wide-ranging imagination.  His vibrant theater pieces tend toward the surreal with occasionally a non- sequitor Dadaist touch.” The Washington Times

“Roussève’s work is a call for grace, a cry to reunite with some large universal framework… inspired, ingenious work.”  - Chicago Sun Times

"Roussève binds humor and deep poignancy. I beg you all to go and see him, and become better, fuller, richer people." - Time Out London

"One of this country's most inspired and inspiring dancemakers."  - San Francisco Chronicle

“Shattering dance/theater."  - The New York Times
