A Panel Discussion in Celebration of QPA’s 40th Anniversary

Join us in celebrating great milestones of the QPA (40th anniversary), Princeton Club of Chicago (150th anniversary), and Princeton Alumni Association (200th anniversary) by highlighting the experiences of notable queer Princeton alumni and their service to the community (bios below). The four panelists, all with ties to Chicago, will share their stories and discuss how their identity has shaped their work and service, whether through politics, nonprofits, or community organizing. All are welcome, and food & drinks will be provided.

 Veronica Pejril *88

Veronica

Veronica Pejril serves as President for Queer Princeton Alumni (QPA), and a member of the Alumni Council Executive Committee. Veronica has been a member of QPA’s board since 2021. While a graduate student in music at Princeton, Veronica was Assistant Master for Wilson College, and a pianist with the Princeton University Jazz Ensemble. Her research in developing computer music tools led to her founding a small business, Black Squirrel Software, to distribute her software to musicians and composers. 

In addition to her service to QPA, Pejril serves on the Executive Board for Indiana Youth Group, the oldest continually-operating LGBTQ+ youth center in the nation. She is an outspoken advocate for the rights of queer and gender diverse youth. Veronica lives in Greencastle, Indiana, where she teaches digital music production techniques at DePauw University. In 2019, she was elected to Greencastle’s City Council, making history as Indiana’s first openly-trans elected official. As a 2020 delegate, Pejril led the Pledge of Allegiance for the 2nd evening of the Democratic National Convention; she is a 2024 DNC delegate and a candidate for her Indiana State Senate seat. Veronica is a parent of grown twin sons, an avid gardener and mom to three cats. 

Brian C. Johnson ’99

Brian

Brian C. Johnson is the founder of Reimagining Capitalism Lab, a research & policy lab – grounded in community voice – that seeks to advance bold solutions to reduce economic inequality in America. Formerly, he served as CEO of Equality Illinois, the statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization. Brian’s passion for fighting for equity was catalyzed by having served as a first-grade teacher and a Teach For America corps member in Baton Rouge, LA. Since that transformative experience, he has served in a variety of leadership roles in public education justice. He has worked as the Vice President of Regional Impact for Leadership For Educational Equity (LEE), the Executive Director of the Larchmont Schools in Los Angeles, and the Executive Director of Teach For America – Los Angeles. Brian earned his AB, magna cum laude, from Princeton University, his JD from Stanford Law School, and his MBA, as an Arjay Miller Scholar, from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He lives with his husband, Toby, and their daughter, Josephine, in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago.

Ryan Ruskin ’90

Ryan Ruskin is the president of the Princeton Alumni Association and chair of the Alumni Council. In addition to his current leadership roles, Ryan Ruskin has served on several alumni committees, including chairing the Awards for Service to Princeton Committee, and was president of the Princeton Club of Chicago. He is an active Alumni Schools Committee interviewer and Class of 1990 Reunions volunteer. He received the Arnold M. Berlin ’46 Award for Service to Princeton in 2015, awarded by the Princeton Club of Chicago. Ruskin is president and CEO of the Ruskin Group, a fourth-generation global sustainable packaging company. In 2015, he assumed the role of non-executive chairman of MyEco, a sustainability education business he helped found that uses technology and innovative products to help consumers break disposable habits. Previously, he was a management consultant with A.T. Kearney. While at Princeton, Ryan was a history major, lived in Rockefeller College, was active with Triangle and the sailing team, and was a member of Cottage. Ryan earned an M.B.A. and a master of engineering management degree, both from Northwestern University. He lives in Chicago with his husband, Mike, and their two Labradors.

Lee Vanderlinden ’13

Lee Vanderlinden (they/them) is an Associate Attorney at Ehsan Law. Lee previously served as managing attorney of the National Immigrant Justice Center’s LGBTQ Immigrant Rights Initiative.Lee is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law and Princeton University. They are admitted to practice law in Illinois and focus exclusively on federal immigration law, representing clients across the United States in a wide range of matters—including asylum, family-based immigration, and humanitarian relief. They live in Chicago with their partner, toddler, and dog.
